CARZALIA VALLEY PRODUCE EXPANDS ONION SHED

Columbus, NM - Carzalia Valley Produce, home of the “Carzalia Sweet” onion, completed the final steps of a new expansion to the Carzalia Valley Produce onion facility. Including this expansion, Carzalia Valley Produce onion facility is over 90,000 square feet under one roof.

The expansion includes four permanent bins with a total capacity of 480,000 lbs. In addition to the permanent bins, Carzalia Valley Produce has the capacity to store over 3000 Macro Plastics bins, total capacity of over 2 million pounds of onions. Also new to the shed is a 6 truck loading dock with load prep areas. “With the new load prep areas and loading docks we will be able to guarantee the loads accuracy and freshness of the onions,” Bill Johnson, president of Carzalia Valley Produce.

This expansion is consistent with Carzalia Valley Produce’s shift from mechanical to computerized equipment. In 2004, Carzalia Valley Produce installed a state-of-the-art Compac Sorting system. “With the use of the new permanent bins and dryers we will be able to insure our customers and the end consumer with the best quality “Carzalia Sweet” onion. Bringing the onions out of the field and curing them with the dryers and storing them in both the permanent and Macro Plastics bins will eliminate the uncontrollable weather factor. This will allow us to control our supply and quality much more efficiently,” James Johnson, vice president of Carzalia Valley Produce.

Carzalia Valley Produce has made a commitment to the sweet onion industry to keep pace of the ever-changing produce world while basing all decisions on the sound, family-oriented values used to establish this farm over four generations ago. Carzalia Valley Produce has been supplying consumers with a superior onion since 1953 and have demonstrated their ethics and responsibility to the produce industry. From this obligation to the industry, the “Carzalia Sweet” was born. The “Carzalia Sweet” season runs from June through September, grown only in the high deserts of New Mexico.
